‘A Start on Such a Night is Full of Promise’

The Vespertine Quintet begin their second winter residency in DeBarra’s on February 28th with a special one-off performance of ‘A Start on Such a Night is Full of Promise’ by English-born and now Berlin-based composer and electroacoustic artist Tom Adams.

Adams will be joining them on the night, to perform this lush, epic and ethereal cycle of compositions and instrumental songs inspired by the first crossing of Greenland made by Norwegian explorer Fridjof Nansen in 1888, and the account that he wrote of the expedition. The work melds strings, piano and electronics with readings from Nansen’s journal, read on the night by Tom’s father Professor Bill Adams of Cambridge University.

Following their hugely popular winter residency in 2015, which saw the quintet perform a unique series of collaborations on Sunday evenings, including Liam O Maonlai, Adrian Crowley and Camilla Griehsel, the group will continue to bring their spacious and sweeping sound to Clonakilty, starting with this exciting performance with Tom Adams, and continuing in March with a collaboration with songwriter Paul Tiernan.
