A centenary celebration of all that is Joyce and Bloomsday in Clonakilty at DeBarras

Organised by @phuckle_ire with the support of the Cope Foundation in Clonakilty, we’ll be celebrating a special lunch-time Bloomsday from 12 Noon to 1pm. Meet outside Clonakilty Post Office at 11.45pm and wander down to De Barra’s Folk Club for some Joycean nibbles, courtesy of @mjoneillbutchers and readings from Ulysses and general craic – with special guests The Cope Foundation Clonakilty & Philip Joyce, grand-nephew of James Joyce!

All are welcome, to read, to spin a yarn, or just to listen.

We’ll be celebrating the epic adventure that is life in everyone.

About Bloomsday:

June 16th is celebrated world-wide as Bloomsday and in Clonakilty for the last few years, The Cope Foundation Clonakilty, MJ O Neills Butchers and De Barra’s Folk Club have been similarly remembering Ireland’s most influential poet and novelist, James Joyce. “Ulysses”, considered to be one of the most important works of modern literature, tells the story of one day in the life of Leopold Bloom, Thursday June 16th, 1904, the year Joyce met Nora Barnacle. The day was first celebrated in Ireland in 1954, the fiftieth anniversary of the first Bloomsday when writers Flann O’Brien and Patrick Kavanagh visited the various locations in Dublin mentioned in the book. The day is now remembered each year. Published in 1922, this first post-lockdown Bloomsday is a special centenary celebration of one of the World’s greatest novels.
